TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  1. The competition is divided into two categories: a closed competition for registered
    students and an open competition for furniture designers and professionals.
  2. Foreign nationals need to be in the possession of a valid resident permit.
  3. Entrants must be 18 years or older.
  4. Entrants may submit more than one design. Each design must be submitted with a
    separate entry form.
  5. Entrants must submit an electronic copy in PDF format and a hardcopy of the design.
  6. All scanned entries must be signed.
  7. Your electronic and hardcopy entries must be accompanied by:
    – Technical drawings or accurate sketching including dimensions and 3D drawings
    (CAD or free illustrations) of the design.
    – Description of the design and materials.
    – Brief report of your philosophy underpinning your design including your
    aesthetic inspiration.
    – An accurate quarter scale model must be submitted. The model can be made out of
    any material.
    – Signed entry form.
    – Signed terms and conditions.
  8. Participants take part and enter the competition at their own risk, and the companies
    bare no responsibility for any loss, damage or harm suffered as a result of participation.
  9. Only original and complete entries will be entered into the competition.
  10. The outcome of the competition is subject to the decision of the judges of the
    competition whose decision is final and no negotiations and/or correspondence will be
    entered into once the final decision has been made.
  11. The WCFI employees, judges, directors, advertising agents and sponsors or their
    immediate family are not allowed to participate in the competition.
  12. Closing date must be adhered to. No extensions will be given.
  13. The finalists will be notified telephonically and via email.
  14. The finalists will have eight weeks to manufacture an actual product.
  15. Winners names will be announced on 4 March 2012 at Design Indaba Expo 2012.
  16. Finalists will forfeit their participation in the competition if they fail to attend the
    prize giving at Design Indaba Expo on 4 March 2012.
  17. The Design Stage entries will be judged according to the following criteria:
    – Originality and innovation
    – Ease of manufacturing and assembly (as set out in your technical drawing)
    – Brief report of the stylistic and aesthetic inspiration and description of the
    design and materials
    – An accurate quarter scale model must be submitted. The model can be made
    out of any material.
  18. The Design Stage finalists entries will proceed to the Manufacturing Stage and
    will be judged according to the following criteria:
    – Predominantly invasive alien wood, i.e. Red River Gum– Eucalyptus
    (to be supplied) can also include steel, plastic, etc.
    – A brief report on what your main problems and contingencies were
    during manufacturing
    – Commercial viability
    – Functionality
  19. Entrants must complete all information as requested above for judging as no marks
    will be given to information not submitted.
  20. The final manufactured product must reflect the drawing.
  21. The final manufactured product must be delivered to the WCFI Offices by the
    17 February 2012.
  22. Finalists' furniture to be displayed at Design Indaba Expo from 29 February to
    4 March 2012.
  23. Finalists to collect their finished product after the show 4 March 2012 at their
    own expense.
  24. The intellectual property belongs to the entrant.
  25. There will be five finalists from each category.
  26. Finalists must provide their own décor / accessories for the exhibition display at
    the Design Indaba Expo from 29 February to 4 March 2012.
